Top 5 Things To Do in Newport, Rhode Island
(Winter Edition)

Since moving to New England, we realized very quickly that there are so many destinations within a short drive from Boston, making the weekend day trip options endless! Even in the winter, on a day with a chill in the air but sunshine still shining, Newport, RI is the perfect ocean escape. While there is plenty to do in and near Newport where you can easily fill up an entire week, here’s how you can spend a day in Newport, Rhode Island in the winter time:

1. Brunch at the Corner Cafe

Before heading to the ocean, fuel up for your seaside adventure by stopping for a quick brunch at the Corner Cafe on Broadway. Their eggs benedict is incredible, especially paired with a Hazelnut Turtle Latte. It’s worth noting that they don’t always take reservations, but I can promise that the wait will be worth it!

2. Walk Along the Cliff Walk

Arguably my favorite thing to do in New England is to walk along the Cliff Walk to soak in the ocean views. The entire walk is about 3.5 miles, but feel free to walk (or not) as far as you wish depending on the weather! Have a seat on the benches near the Breakers Mansion to watch the waves crash against the shore, or depending on the time of year, you can also watch surfers catch a wave or two (...yes even in the winter! We’ve seen it ourselves!).

Too chilly for a long walk? Feel free to drive over to the Forty Steps for a quick pic before hurrying back to the warmth of your car!

3. Visit the Newport Mansions

Transport yourself to the Gilded Age and stroll through some of the “summer cottages” (aka mansions) that are found along the coastline. The Breakers, Marble House, and the Elms are the three most visited. We’ve visited the Breakers and the Marble House thus far, with the Elms next on our list!

Take a break from the cooler ocean breeze and take in the incredible architecture and interior design of another time. Be sure to stop by the Chinese Tea House located on the grounds of the Marble House to see where Alva Belmont held her rallies for women’s right to vote!

4. Cruise on Ocean Ave

On your way back into town, be sure to take the scenic route through the Ocean Drive Historic District along Ocean Ave. The views will have you wanting to pull over to snap a picture or two, or have you drooling over the oceanside homes!

5. Dine & Shop on Bowen’s Wharf

Spend the remainder of your day exploring Newport’s boutique shops! Whether it’s a new painting to hang in your kitchen (like us!), or souvenirs to decorate your bookshelves, there’s all kinds of treasures to be found along Bellevue Ave, Thames Street, Broadway Street, and Bowen’s Wharf!

For dinner, I highly recommend The Mooring where you can order a Bag of Donuts (the savory kind!) while sitting along the water, followed by picking up dessert at the Cookie Jar to conclude the evening.

Annnd that’s a wrap!

Newport, Rhode Island is full of fun activities to enjoy at all times of the year! Although it’s especially known as a summer destination (blog post to come later!), it can also be thoroughly enjoyed during the off-season when all the tourists are gone. There’s still much more to explore in Newport beyond what I’ve listed above, but these 5 Things To Do will make for a fantastic day trip to Newport in the winter time.

Make it an adventure worth sharing about!

'Til the next one,
Gen
